![]() For a headless server, you just need the xorg libraries to get remote gui capability. So it's nice to have the gui, for the cost of several hundred megabytes of libraries and 9% CPU cycles if you have to run the desktop locally. It's handy to have remote xsessions to do things like play last.fm music with gui, feed photoframes with webilder (you need a desktop for that), xload displays, etherape and other graphical network monitoring. I still have a Dapper Drake desktop machine running 24/7 that I use for several services. Most services also have web-based management pages as well. I agree that commandline server management is not difficult. Perhaps there was a meta-package change from Karmic to Lucid so that you didn't get all of the xorg libraries loaded during install.Ĭompare the files_needed.txt list with Lucid and determine what is missing. You just need the xserver-xorg libraries, you don't really need the xserver running. ![]()
